Village Spili ….. don’t just drive through!
Approximately 1,000 years of history look back on the past of the mountainside houses and its approximately 800 inhabitants.
The village consisted of the Venetian era, as today, from two settlements, the so-called Panochori and Katochori (upper and lower village).
25 lion heads invite you to refresh yourself
The jewel of the village, the Venetian fountain Kefalovrissi with its 25 lion heads, is located in the city center and is not to miss; around them the village square with cafes and taverns under huge plane trees invite one to linger. Take some time to stroll quietly through the streets of Spili and to drink water from the lions’ heads. The exact origin of this centuries-old water flood is still unknown, but according to government tests it is the purest spring water with a high iron content and a constant temperature of 13C.
- Spili is located about 30 km south of Rethymnon on the main thoroughfare to the south coast to Plakias, Agia Galini, Phaistos and Matala.
